4 Questions to Ask When Choosing a Health Plan: Open enrollment for NY State of Health starts November 1, 2017

Individuals buying or renewing health insurance for 2018 should ask four questions before selecting a plan.

1. Will the plan cover my prescriptions?
Make sure your medications, including maintenance drugs and contraceptives, are covered by the insurer. Univera Healthcare, for example, covers more than 50 prescription contraceptives.

“Nobody should take it for granted that their medication is covered and should do their homework before buying a plan,” said Richard Vienne, D.O., Univera Healthcare vice president and chief medical officer.

2. Does my doctor accept the plan?
Ask your doctors if they accept the insurance you are considering.

3. What if I can’t see my doctor?
Ask if the plan covers emergency care anywhere in the world. You may also want to inquire as to whether the plan has a telemedicine program that provides 24/7 access to a doctor by phone or video chat when you have a minor health issue and can’t see your physician.

4. Can I get financial help?
You may be eligible for financial help based on your household income and size. Or, you could qualify for the Essential Plan, for $20 or less a month. Individuals earning less than $48,240, and a family of four earning less than $98,400 could qualify for a discount. See if you qualify at TheUniveraDifference.com/ZeroOption .

The open enrollment period for the NY State of Health marketplace runs from November 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018. But, for your coverage to begin on January 1, 2018, you will have to buy a plan by December 15, 2017.
