GLYS GAYLA 10.20.2020 Promises Something for Everyone

Buffalo– When Michael Wah agreed to take over the 38-year old GLYS GAYLA, Western New York’s oldest continuous LGBTQ+ event, it was in a pre-COVID world. Wah, whose expertise is in theatre and music, and with a professional background in restaurant management was a natural fit for the food and entertainment event. Gail Sfeir, the former chair, had left a well-organized event with all the background information intact.

“But in struts COVID,” Wah said, “Slamming her purse down and saying, ‘Nope. Not happening.’” Wah, no stranger to adversity, wasn’t taking no for an answer, “we decided to go virtual, like so many others, but with a few twists and turns that will make this a fun, upbeat event. And, there will be no break in the continuous history of this event. The Pride Parade is one of the oldest continuous events in our community, but it didn’t make it this year — something our community understands but is still disappointed about. We wanted to make sure this long-standing event was able to continue to help GLYS support its mission,” Wah stated.
The GLYS GAYLA, which takes place on October 20, 2020, starts online at 7:00 p.m. for paid attendees ($25 per device), but concludes with a “free to the public” last hour of entertainment that will be live on Facebook and WKBW channel 7’s streaming site. In addition, Channel 7 TV personalities Katie Morse and Ed Drantch will be celebrity co-hosts for the event, promising to kick up the energy a notch. Entertainment includes drag acts, the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus, Leah Zicari, Kerry Kate Abel and Chuck Basil, Anita Waistline and more. Information and tickets can be found at www.glyswny.org/gayla.

“There will be an online auction taking place before the event starting October 6th and going 8:00 p.m., half an hour before the end of the live event,” said Wah, adding that, “some of the auction items are amazing.”
Michael Wah is in his second year as a Board Member for GLYS and his first year as the Chair of the GAYLA. He is a hospitality manager and also performs in drag as CoCo LaTique. Michael/CoCo is a two time Empress (19 & 26) with the Imperial Court of Buffalo (ICOB) and also sits on the Board of Directors for the International Court System as an Heir to Queen Mother I of the Americas, Nicole the Great. The International Court System was founded in 1965 by World War II Veteran and First Openly Gay person to run for Public Office, Jose Sarria. The Imperial Court of Buffalo founded in 1990, is 1 of 70 chapters across Canada, the US and Mexico. The Imperial Court of Buffalo raises funds for other Nonprofits.
