VA Western New York Healthcare System will celebrate the renovation of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, January 22 at 10:30am. Veterans in need of critical care and those who have surgery receive one-on-one care in the ICU from a highly skilled health care team, to include doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and pharmacists, until they are ready to progress to another unit.
This 15 bed unit provides care to some of the most critically ill and complex patients within the VA system. Some of the specialized services and treatment provided on the unit are post-operative cardiac care, plasmapharesis, Impella, Continuous Veno-Veno Hemofilatration Dialysis (CVVHD), Intra-aortic balloon pump(IABP), Ventilator Support and more.
The 12,000 square foot, $733,205 renovation project, was performed entirely by VA Engineering staff. The comprehensive project updated walls, doors, flooring, ceilings, lighting, medical gas system, electric distribution and panels, fire alarm upgrades, nurse call, nurses station millwork, patient lifts, telemetry, and duct cleaning.
“Opening this renewed ICU unit continues the modernization of our VA facilities so we may continue to provide the high quality of care our patients have earned,” stated Michael J. Swartz, Executive Director. “The updates mark an important step in our journey toward creating a Veteran centered culture of excellence.”
