Summer Camps Offer a Unique Outlet for Youth

By Shannon Traphagen

Do you remember your experiences as a youth at summer camp? I do. I remember feeling a sense of belonging, making friendships that lasted throughout my academic years, and how it helped instill confidence in my own abilities and passions.Park school camp

According to the American Camp Association (ACA), children need a variety of experiences in their lives to help them grow into healthy adolescents and adults. Together with the Search Institute, the ACA has found that young people have seven developmental needs important to the camp experience: physical activity, competence and achievement, self-definition, creative self-expression, positive social interactions, structure, and meaningful participation.

Founded in 1912, The Park School of Buffalo has the distinction of being one of the oldest progressive schools in the country. It is an independent, co-educational school serving approximately 300 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten (3 and 4 year olds) lower school (kindergarten through grade 4), middle school (grades 5 through 8), and upper school (grades 9 through 12). Every summer Park School offers a variety of camps to satisfy the above-mentioned developmental needs of youth.

“Our camps are unique in that they truly help young people develop interests, passions, gifts, or athletic ability. We strive to offer something for everyone, and we have a beautiful outdoor space that includes a marsh, pond, and greenhouse. Kids really are hands-on in our camps,” says Elizabeth Rakas, communications coordinator for the Park School.

This summer Park school is proud to offer the following camps
