The air in your home circulates through the HVAC system and air ducts five to seven times a day. During this process, allergens and other contaminants settle in the air ducts and get redistributed into the air you breathe. But can air purifiers really make a difference in helping you breathe better and improve your health?

According to Rachel Taliercio, DO, a pulmonologist with the Cleveland Clinic, “Air pollution can either cause or worsen respiratory symptoms such as difficulty breathing, cough, and upper airway congestion, but it has also been implicated in heart disease.” Dr. Taliercio says that airborne toxins are irritants and have chemical compositions that lead to changes in your blood chemistry, which cause adverse health effects.

One study that Dr. Taliercio cited revealed a connection between air particulate pollution and carotid artery disease, which can lead to stroke. Another study, published in The Lancet, listed pollution as one of the most important risk factors for chronic disease. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that indoor HEPA air filters improved respiratory health in those with asthma.

A small study of 35 Chinese college students found that air purifiers improved air quality, and reduced levels of fine particulate matter by 57%. The researchers found improvements in blood pressure levels and lung function in the students who participated.

Dr. Taliercio says that air purifiers may be particularly beneficial for young children, the elderly, and people with heart and/or lung disease. They may also help people who have diseases that affect the lungs, such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and autoimmune conditions.
