Facing a Breast Health Issue During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Experts from multiple cancer care organizations have offered a new report containing recommendations for prioritization, treatment and triage of breast cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The report titled, “Recommendations for Prioritization, Treatment and Triage of Breast Cancer Patients During the COVID-19 Pandemic” is endorsed by the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers, National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. The ranking goes beyond the Priority A category – the exceptions that require immediate care around urgent situations, such as severe breast abscesses or serious complications following surgery.

Within the report are several instances which fall into the Priority B category – the instances when a patient’s condition does not require immediate attention, but treatment is warranted before the pandemic ends. These include:

·       diagnostic imaging for an abnormal mammogram or suspicious breast symptoms

·       biopsies for BI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions

·       breast MRI for evaluating the extent of disease or pre-chemo assessment

Facing a breast health issue during the COVID-19 pandemic is a scary time. These recommendations should assist patients and physicians with decision-making and important next steps.
