Finding Your Why: From Passion to Practice

by Annette Pinder

Dr. Wellsley Radecke, a licensed psychologist at DENT Neurological Institute, has extensive experience diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and other neurodevelopmental conditions in people of all ages. She has helped thousands of families gain clarity, direction, and peace of mind through her careful, compassionate, and personalized assessments.

A Buffalo native, Dr. Radecke graduated from high school at IMG Sports Academy in Florida and earned her undergraduate degree from Furman University in South Carolina. After returning to Buffalo to complete her master’s degree, she obtained licensure in Marriage and Family Therapy, and later earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Medaille College.

Growing up, Dr. Radecke loved playing soccer, where she learned the importance of teamwork, resilience, and perseverance in the face of adversity. However, it wasn’t just the wins or losses that shaped her, but the quiet transformation that happened when she and her teammates worked with a sports psychologist. “I saw how mental strength, emotional insight, and self-awareness could boost performance, not only on the field but also in everyday life, and I watched my teammates gain confidence, reframe setbacks, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. The experience was pivotal. I realized that psychology isn’t just about treatment; it’s about growth and unlocking human potential.”

It was this early exposure to the power of psychological support that inspired her career in the field of psychology. “I recognized the power of the mind, and as someone who is often hard on myself, I saw the potential we can unlock by understanding how our minds work. Each of us is unique, and the assessments and tests I conduct help us gain a detailed understanding of each individual’s unique characteristics. I see how these insights can significantly influence a person’s life path. Today, as I help others better understand their minds, emotions, and strengths, I realize how psychology has profoundly impacted my life, and I feel called to share that gift with others and pay it forward.”

According to Dr. Radecke, 1 in 31 children are now diagnosed with autism, and 1 in 10 with ADHD. When evaluating her patients, ranging from 18 months to adults, Dr. Radecke conducts comprehensive assessments that include primary symptoms related to diagnostic and presenting concerns, as well as cognitive functioning, executive functions, emotional and behavioral regulation, social interactions, communication, personality, and adaptive skills.

Caregivers are often essential when assessing children, providing detailed histories that include early developmental milestones. Dr. Radecke carefully considers these factors when evaluating young children, teenagers, and adults who exhibit signs of ADHD and autism. She references the saying, “If you meet one person with autism, you have met one person with autism,” noting that no two individuals display the same characteristics.

Dr. Radecke also recognizes the significant barriers that many individuals and families face in accessing prompt and thorough psychological evaluations. Long waitlists and a limited number of specialized providers often delay diagnosis and intervention for those seeking clarity around autism and ADHD. Through her work at DENT Neurologic Institute, Dr. Radecke aims to reduce these barriers by offering comprehensive, neurodiversity-affirming evaluations and clear treatment plans, ultimately helping patients and families feel understood, supported, and empowered.

Dr. Radecke credits her strong professional foundation to her family life, which is deeply rooted in integrity, discipline, and purpose. Growing up in a close-knit, value-driven environment, she continues to find inspiration in her parents and brother, whose talents and work ethic emphasize the importance of making meaningful contributions to others.

Having discovered her passion for psychology early in her training, Dr. Radecke has established herself as a dynamic clinician dedicated to supporting the mental health of individuals and families in our community. “Find your passion and explore every opportunity to discover what truly motivates you. It may not be the first thing you try,” she advises those starting their careers. “I love what I do. My mind is engaged. My spirit is energized.” Besides her family’s support, Dr. Radecke emphasizes the importance of personal growth and self-reflection, both of which fuel a practice built on empathy and respect. “My experience humbles me. It has made me more compassionate toward others and committed to meeting people where they are.”

Dr. Radecke urges those who suspect ASD or ADHD in themselves or a loved one to seek an evaluation, especially for young children, where early intervention is crucial.
