In speaking with Tom Lonzi, owner of Toms Pro Bike, about e-bikes, his first comment was, “People love them, and e-bikes comprise about 40% of our sales.”

In 2020, Forbes magazine predicted that tens of billions of additional bicycle trips would take place in 2022, and that e-bikes would double the number of regular bicyclists in cities throughout the world. No one really anticipated that e-bikes would become a booming industry when they were first patented in 1895, or that they would account for $130 million in sales in the past three years.

E-bikes are extremely versatile, and a great way to get to work, shop, or enjoy off-road riding. They are also becoming increasingly popular with world-renowned tour companies. “Best of all, they appeal to all generations. You can ride them on your own human power, use electric power, or with the motor assisting for easier pedaling. They are regular bikes, but are easier to ride, and often faster and preferable to a car when navigating urban traffic,” says Lonzi.

“Still, not all e-bikes are created equal, so choose wisely,” says Lonzi. There are many e-bike manufacturers, different price points, and features. He adds, “As always, when you are investing in a new bicycle, it’s important to find a reliable shop with experts you can trust, and to find the bike that is right for you.”
