Finally, there’s a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel! New effective COVID-19 treatments are saving lives, doctors have learned how to better treat it, and two vaccines are exceeding researchers’ expectations in their effectiveness.

Both the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were developed using the body’s own RNA (ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells). Without attempting a long scientific explanation, the way in which they were developed allows them to be manufactured safely, quickly, and efficiently. Once FDA approval is provided, they will be administered first to frontline health providers, and individuals most vulnerable to the virus due to their age and underlying health conditions.

Still COVID rates continue to rise and only we can stop it. Too many people have died and too many continue to suffer from the virus’ physical and mental effects. We need to understand that getting through this holiday season safely means being able to celebrate future holidays.

Buffalo Healthy Living Magazine is proud to be a community health resource. We have been providing information through print, social media, and radio. This December, we are adding television in a new show called Buffalo Healthy Living — Your Hometown Health Connection on WBBZ-TV. Our first show, which airs on Wednesday December 9 at 8 pm and again on Saturday December 12 at noon, features experts on Mental Health and Getting Through the Holidays. Then, on Wednesday December 16 at 8 pm and noon on Saturday December 19, health experts will focus on all things COVID, including the safety of the vaccines.

Meanwhile, the most important message December is to have faith and hope while enjoying a safe, socially distant, holiday as we look forward to a happy and healthy 2021.
