Across Western New York, a quiet transformation is taking place in gardens, parks, and backyards. Increasingly, homeowners are replacing traditional landscaping with native plantsspecies that evolved in our region and support local ecosystems.

At CW Native Plant Farm in Akron, ownerKathleen Contrino has spent years demonstrating how powerful that shift can be. What was once farmland has gradually been restored to a thriving habitat filled with native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers that support far more pollinator and beneficial insect species. These insects play a crucial role in pollinating flowers, supporting food crops, and feeding birds and other wildlife.

“People are often surprised to learn how interconnected everything is,” Contrino explains. “When we plant the right species, we help restore the entire system, fostering sustainability.”

According to the National Wildlife Federation, “One of the major advantages of native plants is their resilience. Because they evolved in local climates, they typically require less water, fertilizer, and chemical treatments than many of the ornamental varieties. Once established, many native plants are remarkably low-maintenance. Even small changes can make a difference. Planting species such as milkweed, bee balm, goldenrod, or purple coneflower can attract pollinators and provide habitat for beneficial insects. Native shrubs and trees also provide food and nesting sites for birds.”

“Every yard has the potential to become a small sanctuary for wildlife,” Contrino says. “When people plant native species, they’re not just gardening. They’re helping restore the natural balance our environment depends on, restoring ecosystems and community, making space for wildlife, and stopping the poisoning of the environment.”

Contrino is one of the few native plant experts in Western New York. She says that while every yard is unique and has its own set of challenges, those challenges can be turned into opportunities to add native plants that are ideally suited to creating a beautiful and sustainable landscape.

CW Native Plants is a unique destination featuring a selection of native trees, shrubs, and plants that will thrive in your garden. As a visitor, you will have the opportunity to see demonstrations, view examples of plants in their native habitat, learn about educational programs, and meet expert guides who can create a personalized plan to enhance your property’s biodiversity and overall health. Contrino is a strong believer that we are stronger together and have more in common than what divides us. She says, “I have served people and the environment. Owning a native plant farm and working with people who want to do more for the environment is my only mission. Nothing I have done before reaches the importance of this singular moment in time.”
