7 Fruits for Health and Hydration

By Annette Pinder
Anna Smith, MS, RDN, LDN of LoseIt.com says hydrating is important in warmer weather, because even a 2% decrease in hydration can cause confusion and short-term memory loss. The USDA says that while plain water is the best way to stay hydrated and burn calories, these 7 fruits are a wonderful source of hydration.
- Watermelon consists of 92% water and is a delicious snack at just 40 calories per cup. Watermelon is also high in magnesium and potassium, which replace electrolytes lost through sweating.
- Strawberries are a low-sugar, hydrating fruit consisting of 92% water, and are high in vitamin C. Strawberries are also great in salads and enhance the absorption of iron from plant-based sources, like spinach.
- Cantaloupe is 90% water, and its high-water and fiber content help you feel fuller for a longer period of time, which contributes to weight loss.
- Peaches are loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A, and fiber, and are 89% water.
- Papaya is a tropical fruit that contains 89% water. Papaya improves blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipid levels, and has a strong antioxidant content.
- Plums consist of 88% water per 100-gram serving. They also contain potassium and fiber which help keep your heart strong and blood pressure healthy. According to the American Heart Association, a higher potassium intake leads to lower levels of sodium and healthy blood vessel walls, which help keep your blood pressure in check.
- Pineapple has an 86% water content and contains bromelain, an enzyme that helps reduce inflammation and alleviates arthritis and allergies.
Since all fruits and vegetables provide some level of hydration, Smith says it is important to incorporate them into your daily diet whenever you can.
