Where we live, work, learn, and raise our families can profoundly affect our health. The Buffalo Center for Health Equity (BCHE) works to ensure that everyone in our community has a fair opportunity to live a healthy life, regardless of race, income, or ZIP code. 

Created to address persistent health disparities in Western New York, BCHE focuses on the conditions that shape health long before someone enters a doctor’s office. Access to nutritious food, safe housing, education, employment, transportation, quality health care, and a healthy environment affects a person’s risk of illness and ability to thrive. 

BCHE brings people together on these issues through the annual Igniting Hope Conference, hosted by UB’s Community Health Equity Research Institute and the Erie County Office of Health Equity. Focusing on health equity and the social determinants of health, the event brings together residents, health professionals, researchers, students, community organizations, and leaders to share experiences, examine barriers to better health, and explore solutions. 

Igniting Hope recognizes that community members are essential partners in creating healthier neighborhoods. Their lived experiences help identify challenges that health statistics alone don’t capture and guide efforts toward meaningful solutions. This year’s conference features a multisector collaboration to implement last year’s strategic plan. 

BCHE’s work reminds us that improving health requires more than treating disease. It requires understanding and addressing the circumstances that shape people’s lives. By bringing together community voices, health expertise, research, and advocacy, BCHE and Igniting Hope are helping advance more equitable opportunities for our region to be healthy and thrive.

This year’s annual conference begins with Community Day on Friday, September 18th, featuring food trucks, games, live music, and more.
