As we age, maintaining health becomes more important—and sometimes more complicated. To help individuals live their healthiest lives, Univera Healthcare is highlighting the importance of preventive care through science-based wellness guidelines. These include annual physicals, routine screenings, and, for Medicare members, the Annual Wellness Visit (AWV). Based on recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), these guidelines provide clear guidance on when to seek preventive care based on age and risk factors. From blood pressure screenings and cancer tests to mental health evaluations, these steps enable individuals to take charge of their long-term wellness.

“Annual preventive visits are a cornerstone of healthy aging,” says Dr. Lorna Fitzpatrick, vice president of medical affairs at Univera Healthcare. “These screenings empower people in their 60s and 70s to maintain better health and quality of life. Yet only 59% of adults 65+ complete these visits annually. Even small steps like scheduling an annual visit can lead to significant improvements in long-term health.”

Why Prevention Matters. Waiting until you’re sick to see a doctor means missing key opportunities to stay healthy. Chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline are easier to manage when caught early. Preventive care helps you stay on top of screenings and immunizations that protect your health and support a lively, active lifestyle. Think of preventive care as a wellness guide. Regular check-ins with your primary care provider (PCP) help you stay on top of your health and make informed decisions about your care.

Annual Visits and Screenings. Your yearly physical and AWV are essential and can usually be scheduled together. Recommended screenings include:

  • Blood pressure: at least once a year
  • Cholesterol: Every 4 to 6 years, or more frequently if at risk
  • Colorectal cancer: Begin screening at age 45, or earlier if you are at risk.
  • Mammograms: Recommended every 1–2 years for women.
  • Bone density screening for women 65+ or at risk of osteoporosis
  • Diabetes: Screen annually if overweight or at risk

Immunizations:

  • Flu: Each year
  • Shingles: Two doses starting after age 50
  • Pneumococcal: One or two doses, depending on health status, recommended starting at age 50.
  • COVID-19: Keep Updated

What Is the Medicare Annual Wellness Visit? The AWV is a free annual appointment focused on prevention. It includes reviewing your medical history, assessing fall and cognitive risks, discussing screenings and vaccines, and reviewing medications. Bring a current list of medications to explore safe, cost-effective options, including programs like Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC). During your visit, if additional tests or screenings are needed, a copayment or deductible may apply. This visit is also a good opportunity to discuss your goals, concerns, and preferences for future care. Covered entirely by Medicare, the AWV provides not only health benefits but also a chance to build a stronger relationship with your doctor.
