BUFFALO, NY—October 21, 2022 — It’s time to go red! Red Ribbon Week is celebrated every year October 23rd – 31st. Everywhere you go, people wear red ribbons to show that they are, and support, living drug free lives. It’s the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-abuse prevention campaign. Multiple Prevention Agencies in WNY work together to help educate our communities and schools about Red Ribbon Week and living drug free. Many local coalitions work together to spread the Red Ribbon message every year. Look for the Red Ribbon lawn signs while you are out, celebrate Red Ribbon Sunday in many churches around the area.

In honor of Red Ribbon Week, the following landmarks will “Light Up Red” to help celebrate Red Ribbon Week:

  • 10/23 – Niagara Falls from 10:30 PM – 10:45 PM
  • 10/25 – The Dome on City Hall
  • 10/25 – The Electric Tower
  • 10/25 – The Curtis Hotel
  • 10/26 – The Peace Bridge

Red Ribbon Week is in honor of Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was kidnapped, tortured, and killed in Mexico in 1985, while investigating dangerous drug cartels. When Kiki Camarena decided to join the DEA, his mother tried to talk him out of it, but he told her, “I’m only one person, but I want to make a difference.”

The Red Ribbon stands as the symbol of the commitment to raise awareness and live drug free. Please join us in wearing red ribbons, in lighting up other local landmarks, and spreading the message about living drug free.
