Help for Those at Risk of Suicide and Domestic Violence

by Annette Pinder

As we continue to write about the mental health effects of the pandemic, two important BestSelf Behavioral Health local programs are helping individuals at risk of suicide and domestic violence.

BestConnections Hospital Bridger Program helps people age 25 and over who have been hospitalized at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) for suicidal ideation or a suicide attempt by linking them with a BestSelf hospital navigator. Navigators serve as bridge counselors by remaining connected to patients before and after they leave the hospital, until they feel safe and settled with their outpatient providers. They provide crisis counseling via telehealth, ranging from 15 minutes to one hour, depending upon each person’s unique need. Navigators also help with referrals to care managers, support groups, and more. If you know someone who needs this type of support, call Rachel Rogers at 716-368-3528, or Lindsey Bala at 716-796-3572.

BestConnections Domestic Violence Services provides a safe, non-judgmental space for clients to share their experiences. Counselors assess each individual’s safety and readiness for change, and create a comprehensive safety plan. The program provides education and referrals to existing domestic violence service providers, funding for unexpected or urgent needs, such as pet boarding, down payment on an apartment, and emergency care packages. The program is open to all Erie County residents ages 25 and older, and their dependents. If you have a client, or know someone, who has experienced domestic violence and could benefit from this program, reach out to our Kayla O’Brien at KOBrien@bestselfwny.org, or call her at 716-800-5699.

All insurances are accepted, and it is not necessary to use BestSelf Behavioral Health providers.
