having support during difficult times is important

By Annette Pinder

A strong support network can help breast cancer patients navigate their treatments and all of the uncertainty that can arise after a cancer diagnosis. Those undergoing treatment for breast cancer depend on friends and family for everything from emotional support, to help with household tasks, and more. Family and friends are invaluable to women during their battles with breast cancer, but support from women experiencing the same ups and downs can help patients stay the course to overcome their disease.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) says that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women across the globe, accounting for 25 percent of all cancers in women. The World Health Organization reports that 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. However, it is important to know that the five-year survival rates for breast cancer have improved dramatically. In fact, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancers is 99 percent, while the rate for breast cancers that have spread outside the breast to nearby structures or lymph nodes is 86 percent.

Rising survival rates for breast cancer mean that millions of women have survived the disease, and many of these women are involved in support groups. One such group is the Breast Cancer Network of WNY, which offers many programs to support those diagnosed with breast cancer including:
