Breast Cancer Screening is Important – Early Detection Saves Lives!

One in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime and their risk for developing breast cancer increases with age. Fortunately, mammograms reduce breast cancer deaths. A non-invasive x-ray, mammograms can detect cancer early when it is most treatable and long before it can be felt, improving the odds of survival and the need for more extensive treatment.

Windsong Radiology recommends annual screening mammography for women beginning at age 40, even if they do not have any symptoms. Women who experience a worrisome lump, nipple discharge, a change in breast skin, breast pain, or who have a strong family history of breast cancer, should ask their physician to order a more comprehensive diagnostic mammogram.

3D mammography is advised for women with dense breast tissue because it allows the inner structure of the breasts to be seen more easily and help find tumors at an earlier stage when they are most treatable. 3D mammography also yields fewer false positives and is also helpful for women with a strong family history of breast cancer.

A screening or diagnostic mammogram must be ordered by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. A written prescription is required prior to service and a verbal prescription must be called in by your doctor. Windsong is located in Amherst, Hamburg, Lancaster, West Seneca, and Williamsville, and new mobile screening mammography services are available throughout the region’s underserved communities.
