Building Leaders Who Create Meaningful Change
Daemen’s Ph.D. in Behavioral Science
By Annette Pinder
As communities across New York State work to address growing needs in behavioral health, education, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and healthcare, the demand for highly trained leaders has never been higher. To meet that demand, Daemen University has launched its first-ever Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Behavioral Science—only the second program of its kind in New York State. Designed for working professionals, the program combines advanced scientific research with practical, real-world applications. Evening classes allow students to continue their careers while earning a degree that prepares them to lead change across healthcare systems, educational settings, community organizations, public policy, and human services.
“The need for highly trained professionals to lead interdisciplinary teams and develop solutions to complex societal challenges has never been greater,” says Dr. Vicki Madaus Knapp, Associate Professor, Executive Director, and Chair of Daemen University’s Behavioral Science Department.
Behavioral science focuses on understanding human behavior and applying evidence-based strategies to improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities. Graduates of the program will be prepared for leadership roles in research, higher education, consulting, advocacy, organizational behavior management, and systems improvement. A hallmark of Daemen’s program is its scientist-practitioner model, which integrates rigorous research and practical application. Students learn to evaluate scientific evidence, conduct meaningful research, and translate findings into solutions that improve lives. The program offers concentrations in Behavioral Health, Teaching, and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, allowing students to tailor their studies to their professional interests and career goals.
According to Dr. Knapp, one of the most pressing challenges facing New York is the shortage of doctoral-level professionals prepared to lead in behavioral health and developmental disability services. As demand continues to grow, many individuals and families face long wait times and limited access to support. “Many healthcare and community systems are not fully equipped to assess and intervene effectively for individuals with complex behavioral and developmental needs,” Knapp explains. “We need more professionals who can drive meaningful change at both the individual and systems levels.” That systems-focused approach is central to the program’s mission. Rather than focusing solely on direct services, students learn to improve organizations, policies, and service delivery systems to achieve sustainable, long-term impact. Collaboration is also a key component, and graduates are prepared to work alongside healthcare providers, educators, therapists, social workers, policymakers, and community organizations.
The department’s commitment to excellence is evident in faculty members such as Dr. Deborah Napolitano, Director of the PhD Program, who recently received the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts’ prestigious Jerry Shook Award for Public Policy Advocacy. A nationally recognized expert in behavior analysis, Napolitano has spent her career advancing services, public policy, and professional standards for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her work has helped shape licensure standards and improve access to services throughout New York State. Daemen’s Behavioral Science Department maintains strong community partnerships with Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), the Golisano Institute for Developmental Disability Nursing, and other organizations dedicated to improving care and outcomes for vulnerable populations. These partnerships provide valuable opportunities for research, collaboration, and real-world learning.
As Western New York’s population ages and the need for behavioral health and developmental disability services continues to grow, Daemen University’s new Ph.D. in Behavioral Science prepares leaders to address these challenges with scientific expertise, compassion, and innovation. More than a degree, the program is an investment in improving lives. By preparing the next generation of researchers, educators, advocates, and system leaders, Daemen is helping build a future where individuals, families, and communities have greater access to the services and support they need to thrive.
