BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Igor Puzanov, MD, MSCI, FACP, Andrew Hyland, PhD, Maansi Bansal-Travers, PhD, MS, and Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PharmD have all been identified as influential researchers on Clarivate Plc’s Highly Cited Researchers list for 2021.

The annual list from the analytics company is composed of researchers whose names are drawn from publications that rank in the top 1% of citations in their given field.
Here are some of the scientists’ most recent projects:

Dr. Igor Puzanov, The Judith and Stanford Lipsey Endowed Chair in Clinical Cancer Research, Senior Vice President of Clinical Investigation, Director of the Center for Early Phase Clinical Trials, Chief of Melanoma: Most recently, Dr. Puzanov was first author on a retrospective study that identified the protein troponin as an early and reliable predictor of myocarditis in patients receiving immunotherapy. This work was published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer.

Dr. Andrew Hyland, Chair of Health Behavior: Utilizing data collected in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, Dr. Hyland and team’s most recent study looked at the habits of heavy smokers who were not actively trying to quit smoking. Interestingly, they uncovered eightfold greater odds of quitting with daily e-cigarette use. Their findings were published in JAMA Network Open in late December last year.

Dr. Maansi Bansal-Travers: In addition to working with Dr. Hyland on several PATH Study elements, Dr. Bansal-Travers has investigated smokers’ perception of cigarette brands, pack designs and warning labels, as well as retrospective studies into the smoking habits of adults and youth in the United States.

Dr. Maciej Goniewicz: Work continues for Dr. Goniewicz on a multi-million-dollar National Cancer Institute-funded grant looking at combustible and electronic tobacco products. Alongside his fellow health behavior researchers, he also contributes to the PATH Study and published several papers in 2021 investigating e-cigarette use in pregnant women and adolescents, plus awareness of several heated tobacco brands.

“It is increasingly important for nations and institutions to recognize and support the exceptional researchers who are driving the expansion of the world’s knowledge. This list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Roswell Park who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers,” said David Pendlebury, Senior Citation Analyst at Clarivate. “The research they have contributed is fueling the innovation, sustainability, health and security that is key for our society’s future.”
