Robert Gore, MD, Jacobs School alumnus and founder of Kings Against Violence Initiative in Brooklyn, will address students

BUFFALO, N.Y. – More than 200 college and high school students from throughout the state will gather Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo for Rx for Success: Preparing for Medical School. Rx for Success is an annual UB program that helps college students prepare for careers in medicine.

The program is co-sponsored by UB’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) and the Jacobs School chapters of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), which supports current and future underrepresented medical students, and the National Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), which advocates for the improved health of the Latinx community in the United States.

Even in a diverse state like New York, where African Americans and Hispanics/Latinos comprise more than 30% of the population, underrepresented groups make up only 12% of the physician workforce.

UB’s CSTEP Director Shanna Crump-Owens says that Rx for Success is designed to help talented underrepresented students by providing them with essential information from Jacobs School medical students, faculty and physicians who share strategies on how to become a competitive applicant to medical school.

The free program includes breakfast, lunch, hands-on workshops and tours.

Speakers range from Jacobs School students who will discuss their experiences applying to and attending medical school, to faculty and admissions administrators who will explain the application process and the MCAT, the medical school entrance exam.

Who: More than 200 college and high school students will attend from throughout New York State. Keynote speaker is Robert Gore, Jacobs School alumnus, attending physician in emergency medicine at Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn and founder of the anti-violence organization, KAVI.
