Summer and Health

By Annette Pinder

Warmer weather is finally here — a time to enjoy the outdoors, longer days, more sunshine, and cloudless blue skies. It’s also time to get out our summer wardrobe, eat fresh fruits and veggies, take road trips, go to the beach, swim, garden, enjoy picnics, barbecues, and festivals.

According to NIH.gov, summer also helps us feel healthier. Increased sunlight, outdoor activity, reduced stress, and improved sleep and mood help improve our physical and mental health. Sunshine also boosts our vitamin D levels, aiding in bone health, immune function, and even reducing the risk of certain cancers and autoimmune diseases.

It may surprise you to know about all of the wonderful things to do this June. Aside from farmer’s markets, consider checking out Glen Park Art Show, Lewiston Garden Fest, SpringFest at Beaver Meadow, 2025 Strawberry Moon Festival, Third Annual Rainbow City Pride & Silent Disco, Second Annual Lockport Pride, Camp Lima German Festival, New York State Yoga Fest, RTPI Bluebird Festival, Buffalo Niagara Dragon Boat Festival, M&T Outdoor Concert Series, Rockin’ 2025 The Beaches at AKG, Albion Strawberry Fest, Allentown Art Fest, Buffalo Greek Fest, Festival Italia, Juneteenth Fest, Kenmore Days, Kenmore Porchfest, 49th Lockport Outdoor Arts & Crafts Festival, Oliver Street Pride Festival, Pride Parade, Roycroft Summer Festival, South Buffalo Porchfest, Taste of Diversity Festival, 100 American Craftsmen at Kenan, West Seneca Community Days, Ride for Roswell, and more.
