A spike in new patients and a demand for services is prompting the Neighborhood Health Center of WNY to open a second clinic on Niagara Street.

Neighborhood Health paid $750,000 for the 24,060-square-foot building at 1569 Niagara Street, buying it from Siam Properties Inc. of Amherst, according to documents filed in the Erie County Clerk’s office. The site is sandwiched between two other Neighborhood Health Center locations at 300 Niagara Street that it leases from Kaleida Health and its headquarters/health clinic at 155 Lawn Avenue in Buffalo’s Black Rock neighborhood.

Officials peg the project’s development cost at $10 million.

“The opportunity to provide this added space for patients will allow us to continue to meet the growing demand for access to affordable health care,” said Joanne Haefner, Neighborhood Health Center CEO.

The 1569 Niagara Street building, constructed in 1908, had been used as a storage center.

Justine David, Neighborhood Health Center communications manager, said a significant portion of the project’s fund is coming from an allocation made last year from a New York state capital grant.

Neighborhood Health Center, which has 26,000 patients, will offer a full array of medical services at the new location. Services include OB-GYN, pediatrics, dentistry, behavioral health, nutritional counseling, podiatry and pharmacy. Some administrative offices will also be located in the Niagara Street site.

Construction and renovation work will start this winter and the clinic should be open by late next year.
