Whether it is pioneering lab research or developing new procedures and treatments, innovation thrives at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. Department of Urology surgeon Eric Kauffman, MD, was recognized for his novel approach for prostate cancer surgery by the American Urological Association (AUA), receiving a Best Video award for 2020.

Dr. Kauffman’s video details a technique he developed for performing radical prostatectomy, using what is known as extended prostatic urethral preservation, or EPUP. This technique preserves urinary tract anatomy, which has the potential for faster urinary control post-surgery. Prostatectomy, or the removal of the prostate, is often a first-line treatment for aggressive prostate cancer. At Roswell Park, 100% of these surgeries are done with robot assistance, a minimally invasive option that enables a speedier recovery in patients.

Dr. Kauffman’s video was one of 14 videos selected by meeting organizers as award winners through a blind review process.

“We congratulate Dr. Kauffman on this deserved recognition from our AUA colleagues around the world,” said Khurshid Guru, MD, Chair of the Department of Urology and Director of Robotic Surgery at Roswell Park.

Founded in 1902, the American Urological Association promotes the highest quality urological clinical care through health care policy, education and research.
