Refugees represent a tapestry of colors, cultures, languages, and experiences, and Tiferet (תִּפְאֶרֶת) is a Hebrew word that means beauty, balance, and adornment. Jewish Family Services (JFS) embraces the concept of Tiferet when reflecting upon the contributions of refugees in our community.

World Refugee Day, held annually on June 20, brings attention to the 28 million refugees worldwide who enrich our lives and communities. JFS is proud of the vital role our organization has in welcoming these amazing individuals. The work isn’t easy, but the rewards are significant. Examples include preparing a home for a family of eight from Ukraine; helping a child from Somalia become enrolled in school; and assisting an individual from the Democratic Republic of Congo to obtain employment.

Tiferet 2023 is a celebratory event designed for families that offers the opportunity to sample international foods; goods and wares that represent the styles and colors from different countries; and the ability to participate in music, dance, poetry, and to gain a greater understanding of a refugee’s journey to safety.

Tiferet 2023 encompasses much of what you would expect at a festival that is safe, inclusive, family-friendly, and enriching. This year’s goal is to have all guests learn about the rich, bold, and beautiful tapestry of a community that is enhanced by those who were once refugees, and who we now proudly call our friends.

The cost for attending this wonderful event is $20 for adults and $10 for youth, with all proceeds benefiting the work undertaken by JFS. Visit www.jfswny.org to purchase tickets and learn more.
