Expanding Mental Health Services
DENT and BryLin Collaboration

by Annette Pinder

DENT Neurologic Institute (DENT) and BryLin Behavioral Health System, Inc. (BryLin) are collaborating to help the WNY community during these challenging times by increasing people’s access to mental health services.

DENT, a leading provider of comprehensive neurological care in our region for over fifty years, treats adult patients for a wide range of mental illnesses and addiction disorders, including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and more. DENT’s psychiatric team has grown considerably, expanding their interventional psychiatry services with state-of-the-art treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Ketamine Infusion, Esketamine (for medication-resistant depression), and psychotherapy. Patients receive treatment through DENT’s Amherst, Orchard Park, and Williamsville locations.

At hospital location in downtown Buffalo, BryLin Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient mental health care for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults in crisis struggling with various mental illnesses. The hospital is the only ambulatory center for both inpatient and outpatient Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in WNY. ECT is considered to be the most effective and rapidly acting treatment today for major depression and other mental illnesses. BryLin’s outpatient Behavioral Health Center in Williamsville offers mental health and substance use disorder care using evidence-based practices, treatment models, interventions, and techniques.

“The current global health crisis has truly underscored the necessity of collaboration to preserve and maximize our valuable medical resources. This collaboration is a prime example of our best instincts. It is through progressive thought and action that we can overcome even the greatest challenges,” said Horacio A. Capote, MD, DENT’s Director, Division of Neuropsychiatry.

Clearly, this will help expand care to people of all ages, both in-patient and out-patient. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, a psychiatrist at DENT and Chief Medical Officer of Bry-Lin, says, “This partnership will ultimately benefit all of our patients by improving their access to psychiatric care and by bringing them novel and effective treatments that offer new hope.”

Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, Medical Director of DENT says, “This is a partnership that WNY deserves, with top private neurology and psychiatry practices combining resources and building relationships that will benefit the WNY community and beyond.”

Dr. Eric D. Pleskow, BryLin’s President and CEO, attributes Bry-Lin’s foundation for success to the compassionate care provided by its staff. He says, “Bry-Lin has had a long-term collegial relationship with DENT by focusing on patient-centered care and bringing respect and dignity to the patients and families affected by mental health issues.”

Although the collaboration is relatively new, Dr. Capote says it is already starting to impact patients. He says, “Instead of competing, we are maximizing our efforts to help patients.” Dr. Capote is also excited about innovative new treatments that will be able to help patients who have chronic pain.
