People Inc.’s Environmental Modifications (EMODS) Department can help.
The only such program in Western New York, including Rochester through the Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities Regional Office, People, Inc. coordinators help eligible individuals secure funding through the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) make home modifications. Project Managers help install or change ramps, wheelchair lifts, lower countertops, construct barrier-free showers, widen doorways, install grab bars and automatic or manual door openers, ceiling tracks, and fences. Assistive technology safety and accessibility accommodations include hygiene seats, shaker beds, service animals, and specialized seating. Vehicle modifications include driver controls, ramps, lift-assist seating, and more.
People Inc. helped Buffalo’s Lee family on two occasions when their daughter Yuna, now 14, required changes over the years. “Most homes are not accessible for people using a wheelchair,” says Jai Lee. They had been using an unsafe ramp into their front door. After a comprehensive assessment of the home, People, Inc. secured an accessible platform and ceiling lift system through the garage, door widening, and solid floor surfaces for rolling.
“You have to look at the whole picture to visualize what’s needed. Yuna is completely dependent on others for her mobility, and People Inc. has enabled us to be together,” says Jai Lee. Anthony Rushford, EMODS project director says, “The most rewarding aspect of what we do is give families peace of mind and greater independence for their loved one.” Learn more about EMODS at www.people-inc.org/emods.
