It is difficult to choose from the many professionals licensed to practice psychotherapy. How do you know which one is for you? Often, it isn’t the degree that matters the most, but rather the therapist’s ability to provide you with what you need.

To find a therapist who meets your needs, start by researching their areas of expertise and approach to therapy. In can help to check the therapist’s social media presence, but speaking with the professional directly often provides even more insight. Since the therapeutic relationship is a highly personal interaction, professional chemistry is important, and you should feel comfortable. Your comfort may be affected by how the clinician dresses, responds to your questions, the management style of the office, or simply how you feel in the presence of your therapist.

Other considerations that may impact your choice are your therapist’s office location, hours, and whether you can be seen in person or via telehealth. What are the therapist’s policies regarding confidentiality? Who has access to your information? What is the cost of these services? Does your insurance cover any portion of the fee, and does the therapist accept your insurance?

Choosing the right therapist is an important life decision, as is doing everything possible to take care of yourself throughout the process.
