Publisher’s Letter July 2025

No matter how you look at it, our country is in the midst of an ongoing crisis, and the stress never seems to lessen. If you’re having more trouble sleeping than usual or feeling increasingly anxious and fearful, you are not alone. According to MentalHealthRecovery.com, the state of our world affects all of us more than we realize.
At some point this year, when I realized how much the state of our world was affecting me, I knew I had to concentrate on all the positive aspects of my life. This didn’t mean neglecting my responsibility as a citizen to help make a difference where I could. However, it did mean taking care of myself by finding positive and constructive ways to remain mentally and physically healthy. Sometimes I accomplish this by going for a walk, meditating, knitting, enjoying a Zumba dance class at the gym, spending quality time with a friend, dining out (my favorite), or buying a new fun outfit. Ultimately, it’s about focusing on what’s right in front of me rather than on situations I can’t control.
I hope that, as American citizens, we all take the time to determine and act on what we truly believe in and stand for during these extraordinary times. (Just for the record, I don’t think separating kids from their parents is humane or just, and whether we want to believe it or not, the anguish felt by those families affects us all.) I also believe it is dangerous to deny the importance of diversity, science, and research. If you’re upset, consider reaching out to your elected officials to express your concerns. Stay informed about what’s happening, but also recognize when you’ve had enough and take a break by focusing on something enjoyable. There’s no better time to find peace and contentment in all you do than during the summer.
Sincerely,
Annette
