Senior Companions Form Lasting Friendships
Consider Volunteering!

By Danielle Herrmann

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, people found safe and creative ways to stay in touch with friends and family members. People Inc. also adapted to the crisis by developing unique programs for people to safely connect with others. For example, the agency’s Senior Companion Phone Connection pairs isolated older adults with volunteers ages 55 or older who offer a friendly, comforting voice and peace of mind.

Since the Phone Connection began in 2020 as part of People, Inc’s Senior Companion Program, many companions formed strong friendships through weekly calls. For example, Betty has been speaking with Albert for over a year. “When the two finally could meet safely in person this past summer, they were so excited,” shared People Inc.’s program coordinator Alissa Yax, who said, “It seemed like Betty and Alex had been friends for years!”

People Inc.’s Senior Companion Program assists older adults experiencing difficulty with daily living tasks, with a goal of helping them remain independent. Aside from friendship and companionship, volunteers can assist with tasks such as grocery shopping and errands; alert doctors and family members to potential problems; and provide respite for caregivers.

Senior Companion participants must be 55 years or older, live in Erie County, and meet income eligibility requirements. New volunteers are welcome, especially during the winter months when people become more isolated. The Companion Phone Program is a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved to add meaning to their lives.
