Tom Burke was in his 20s when he began misusing drugs and alcohol. Recognizing the connection between alcohol and substance abuse and genetics, he says, “Alcohol and substance abuse was prevalent in my family.” Through it all, Tom achieved success working in the pharmaceutical industry, but knew his life was falling apart. “Pride kept me from getting help,” said Tom.

After living in Europe for 10 years, Tom moved to Philadelphia, where he was hospitalized after becoming very ill. “Being in the hospital got me away from drugs and alcohol for a few weeks, but when I tried to reduce drinking on my own, I was shocked to find that I couldn’t.” Not knowing where to turn, he saw a therapist who told him, “Until you stop, I can’t help you. There’s not much we can accomplish together while you still drink. His words scared me.”

It took Tom four to five years to stop, and he has been sober for 12 years. He is now a New York State Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA), working with individuals suffering from addiction, substance use, and chronic relapse. “A recovery coach is someone whose personal experience helps support others achieve sobriety,” says Tom. He provides education, motivation, often working in conjunction with counselors, mental health providers, and sobriety programs. He helps individuals develop goals based on their unique needs, along with a healthy support system.

Having had his own wellness practice for more than a decade, Tom is excited to offer recovery coaching to clients. Proud of his choices, he says, “Seeing so many people succeed gives me hope.” Learn more about Tom at www.psychologytoday.com/profile/910456, or call him at 716-870-8263 for a free 15-minute consultation.
