In conversations about maternal and child health, fathers are sometimes left out. Yet growing evidence shows that when fathers are engaged, children are healthier, families are more stable, and communities are stronger. The Fatherhood Initiative of theBuffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Network(BPPN)—often known as the Buffalo Fatherhood Initiative—was created to ensure that fathers are not only included but also empowered.

BPPN has long focused on improving outcomes for mothers and babies in Western New York. The Fatherhood Initiative expands that mission by recognizing that fathers play a critical role even before a child is born. By supporting men during the prenatal and early childhood years, the program helps build stronger foundations for families from the start.

At the heart of the initiative is education. Programs such as the Nurturing Fathers Program offer structured classes that help men develop essential parenting skills. Participants learn to communicate effectively, manage stress, practice positive discipline, and build healthy relationships with their children and co-parents. For many, it is the first time they have practical tools—and a supportive environment—to explore what it means to be an involved father.

But the initiative goes beyond parenting classes. Mentorship and personal development are key components, especially for younger fathers who may be juggling work, relationships, and new responsibilities. Through coaching and peer support, participants gain confidence, set goals, and begin to see themselves as capable, consistent caregivers.

Mental and emotional health are also central to the program’s approach. Fatherhood can bring pressure, uncertainty, and stress, especially for men who may not have had strong role models. The initiative provides safe spaces where fathers can talk openly about their experiences, challenges, and fears—something many men are not often encouraged to do. Workshops such as 24:7 Dad® emphasize emotional awareness, communication, and the importance of being present and engaged. In addition, the program offers practical life skills, including financial literacy and guidance on accessing community resources. These supports recognize that economic stability and personal well-being are closely tied to a father’s ability to be present for his family.

The impact of these efforts is significant. Research shows that children with involved fathers are more likely to succeed in school, build healthy relationships, and enjoy better emotional well-being. For mothers, a supportive partner can reduce stress and improve overall family health. In this way, investing in fathers is an investment in entire families.

The Buffalo Fatherhood Initiative is built on a simple yet powerful idea: fathers matter. By providing education, mentorship, and support, the program helps men step into their roles with confidence and purpose. In doing so, it strengthens not only individual families but also the health and future of the broader community.

As Western New York continues to address disparities in maternal and child health, initiatives like this remind us that solutions often begin with connection, support, and recognition of the vital role every parent—mother or father—plays.
