Buffalo, NY – Karl Shallowhorn, a leading national mental health advocate and educator based in Buffalo, NY, announces the launch of a new consulting firm, Shallowhorn Consulting, LLC. The business, focused on providing behavioral health & organizational development training, comes at a critical moment when demand for servies is expected to far outpace current capacity.

Mr. Shallowhorn is a New York State Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor. He is a mental health first aid instructor for youth, adults, veterans, higher education and older adults; and has worked in the areas of mental health, rccovery, as well as writing extensively including for BP Magazine: www.bphope.com/author/karlshallowhorn/

In this new endeavor, he is joined by Lisa Prefontine,  a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, who is in private practice. Together they bring more than a combined 36 years of professional experience to this venture. In addition, Mr. Shallowhorn is a person with lived experience with bipolar disorder and co-occurring addiciton disorder with more than 32 years of continuous recovery. This unique combination of personal and professional experience allows Mr. Shallowhorn and Ms. Prefontaine to provide a wide breadth of knowledge and information on a variety of mental health and substance use-related topics.

With the advent of COVID-19, Americans are more acutely aware of the importance of mental health. Even in advance of this current pandemic, 1 out of 5 individuals in the U.S. lives with a mental health disorder, and the number is undoubtedly increasing. With people’s routines being disrupted and the wave of uncertainty American’s are experiencing, many organizations are having to shift the way they operate or deal with staff reductions that create stress and anxiety. These stressors need to be addressed in order to help these businesses respond to the demands of this unchartered territory.

In response, Shallowhorn Consulting LLC will be delivering online training and workshops—and as soon as possible—in-person workshops as well. Programs including Mental Health First Aid, clinical assessment and diagnosing, Mental Health 101, and Self-Care: The Body-Mind Connection will be provided, as well as consultation to help both for profit and not-for-profit organizations and schools help adminstrators and staff proactively develop tools for themselves as well as those they serve.

In addition, Mr. Shallowhorn is also providing speaking opportunities which draw from his personal experience to reach audiences in an empathetic and meaningful way.
